September is Suicide Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness of this urgently important crisis. For many of us, the topic can be uncomfortable to talk about due to stigma and feelings of fear, shame or embarrassment – but avoiding the conversation doesn’t negate these sobering facts: *Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and the 12th leading cause of death overall in the U.S. *The VA estimates that 22 veterans commit suicide each day.
We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. The goal of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. Visit nami.org. to learn about the Warning Signs and Risk Factors, What You Need to Know About Youth Suicide, and more. We are here to take care of each other. In addition, check out these local resources: Crisis Support Services of Nevada, AFSP Nevada, and #forever14 Caleb’s Angels.
