Over the years, Lake Tahoe has been a location source for movies, the most famous of which is Godfather II. Although many locals were extras in the film, my two German Shepherds were on location 5 days a week for six, and the result was a fast flash of fur across the screen after the shooting scene when the dogs were let out of containment. They made $400!
Today we have two films circulating. Buried: the 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche , a documentary from Alpine Meadows-based Realization Films, was purchased by Netflix last May. It was also shown in local and main theaters.
Now Weak Layers, a ski film shot at Palisades and around Tahoe last winter, also by Realization Films, will debut in theaters on January 5. It will be shown at Tahoe City’s Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema from Friday, Jan 5 – Jan 11. For more information – buriedfilm.com and weaklayers.com
