South Shore
Over the state line into California, South Lake Tahoe, the only other incorporated town in the Region, is surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada and has miles of sandy shoreline. Residents enjoy easy access to every imaginable outdoor activity, with skiing at Heavenly Valley – a Vail Resort, hiking, biking, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing all in close proximity. The town bustles with shops, hotels and restaurants, with most of the commercial activity concentrated by the California-Nevada border.
The Shops at Heavenly Village serve as the central hub, offering a unique array retail and dining choices, as well as a gondola to the top of Heavenly Valley resort. South Lake Tahoe hosts many popular events, including the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship and numerous outdoor music events in summer. You’ll will never run out of things to do at South Lake Tahoe. Bring a picnic to beautiful Baldwin Beach, get your thrill on at the action-packed Heavenly Adventure Park, or go horseback riding or hiking on the spectacular Tahoe Rim Trail. In the winter, shred the slopes of Heavenly and enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe, all at the same time.
South Lake Tahoe offers the best nightlife on the lake. Start your evening with an opulent, lakefront dining experience at the Edgewood restaurant, followed by a round of high-stakes poker at Harrah’s. South Lake Tahoe is a fantastic launch point for all kinds of outdoor adventures. You can take a Jeep tour on the famous Rubicon Trail, go fly fishing on the Truckee River, or tackle any number of rock-climbing routes along the Highway 50 corridor. You could seriously live here for years and still not do everything. South Lake Tahoe has some of the most affordable cabins on the entire lake. You’ll find classic cabins, luxury condos, comfortable mountain homes, one-of-a-kind estates and suburban-style homes with waterfront access.
From South Lake Tahoe, continue along the South Shore past Bijou with its fabulous, expansive beach, on past modest commercial offerings to the “Y’, where Hwy 89 intersects with Hwy 50. The South Lake Tahoe Airport (no commercial service) is a short way down Hwy 89 along with the popular Lake Tahoe Golf Course. As you start up Hwy 89 toward the West Shore, long-time Evan’s Gourmet Café is among a few smaller eating offerings. From here take the scenic drive by Richardson’s Camp Ground with its well-known Beacon bar, restaurant and market, then on past Cascade Lake and Emerald Bay. At this point you are now on the West Shore!
